Preliminary results of the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) for both circularity circuits

LIFE CLOOVER² continues to advance in the environmental assessment of its circularity models through the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of the two pilot circuits developed within the project: the industrial circuit for drums and jerry cans and the commercial circuit for crates, both applied to the agri-food sector.

The study has been carried out in collaboration with ITENE – Packaging, Transport and Logistics Research Center, a technology centre with extensive experience in Life Cycle Assessment studies and environmental analysis.

The LCA considers 10 environmental impact categories, including climate change, acidification, eutrophication, photochemical ozone formation, the use of fossil and mineral resources, and water use. The assessment is based on real data obtained from the LIFE CLOOVER² pilot demonstrators, providing a representative basis for analysing the environmental performance of the proposed circular models.

The preliminary results highlight the environmental potential of combining reuse and recycling within the same circularity model. The analysis considers the relative contribution of the different environmental impact categories and shows the important role that both strategies can play in reducing the environmental impact associated with plastic agri-food packaging.

These results represent a further step in the project’s objective of generating real data to assess and demonstrate the potential of circular models for plastic packaging, while supporting the transition towards more resource-efficient and sustainable packaging systems.
